The Magic of MSM
20251002_121646.jpg

I am a very sceptical person at heart. When I hear wild claims about the next 'cure for all' I usually sigh and roll my eyes...

Yet, conversations about MSM kept popping up in my world. I decided to try MSM capsules (which are very expensive, by the way), yet I didn't really feel any different. I also tried MSM powder/crystals last year, and again, no significant difference. I just noted how very bitter it tasted.

Then at the beginning of the hay fever season last year (2025) I decided to give it a go again.

After all, it is supposed to be life-changing when it comes to hay fever.

The thing with MSM is this: different people recommend to take it differently. In the past, I took it with some other supplements and hid the taste in lemon water, as recommended by most websites.

Last year during the hay fever season, however, I took MSM on its own - in water only. I started with half a teaspoon and over a couple of weeks I built to two heaped teaspoons a day. I kept it 20-30 minutes away from other foods, drinks and supplements.

And that is when the magic happened.

The previous week I was a snotty, sneezy mess at one of our home ed meet-ups in a field full of pollen. By now, though, I might have sneezed once. Somebody even commented: You don't seem to have issues with the pollen today.

Indeed, I did not. After over 3 decades of struggling with hay fever, it felt pretty life-changing.

I have looked into MSM a lot more since.

It is a pure form of organic sulphur, distilled from plants.

Sulphur is a major mineral our body needs for detoxification, cellular renewal and general liver health. It acts as an antioxidant, healing oxidation, in other words, inflammation.

What are some of common forms of inflammation?

Arthritis, fatigue, aches and pains, allergies (even hay fever), digestive issues, hormonal problems...

The sad truth is that sulphur is one of the first minerals to get lost in the modern farming practices. Because of the soil depletion, even organic produce may not have adequate enough levels of sulphur.

Our liver needs sulphur to work optimally. You know I am a big fan of doing a more dedicated liver support once or twice a year. Interestingly enough, I felt the same kind of lightness in my shoulders once I got to the 2 heaped teaspoons of MSM, as I get when I do my liver detox with my favourite Global Healing Liver Health tincture.

You may remember from my Liver article that the liver loves bitter tastes. Let me tell you - MSM is super bitter! Yet, it is a desirable form of bitterness (in our society we have lost the bitter taste and replaced it with the combination of oily, sweet and salty).

When I do not start my day with my bitter MSM drink, I find myself craving something bitter later on in the day. Isn’t that interesting? I believe once we give our body what it needs, it will start giving us the signal/communication in a way we can understand.

MSM can help with

hormonal balance (the liver breaks down the used up estrogens),

thyroid health (the liver converts the passive thyroid hormone to the active one),

digestion (the liver breaks down fats and also sugars),

detoxification (of certain heavy metals and other toxins),

more energy (as the liver gets rid of some of the toxins, it is able to produce more energy).

hair and nail growth (as sulphur is actually a very important mineral structurally, it helps with growth and strength of nails and hair).

Is there anybody in our society who does not need help with our precious liver?

To find out more about the liver, here is my article all dedicated to the wonderful organ:

The Liver – King of Balance

At the time of writing this, I had a 1.2kg bag of MSM crystals still on the go, after over 3.5 months – with another week’s supply or so left in there. Not bad, eh?

Yes, the powder is very bitter.

Yes, you have to take it on its own, away from everything else.

And yes, the benefits can be pretty incredulous!

I personally would not bother with capsules any more, as they are very pricey and you don't quite know how much you are taking.

How to take it?

Start taking half a teaspoon a day and slowly build up to 1-2 teaspoons. You may need less, or you may even need to take 3-4 teaspoons. Every body is different. You can also take it twice a day, morning and night. When you reach the right amount, you will know. You may start feeling a sense of lightness in your right shoulder where the gallbladder meridian is (at least, that is how I feel it).

The liver and gallbladder - they get supported at the same time.

I have my own stock of the super scrumptious MSM crystals in the 1.2kg size for sale.

They are made by/for the Raw Living company.

I have been a customer of Raw Living for many years. I love the quality of their products and the ethos of the company. As you can imagine, I have tried many different supplements from all over the place - yet, I keep coming back to Raw Living for my MSM – because it works and is the best value I have found.

(The 1.2kg may seem huge – yet, if you use it throughout the high pollen season, it will last you for 4 months or so – which is just the perfect size and value.)

There is a great book all dedicated to MSM if you fancy further reading:

Jacob Stanley, The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain

Dr Stanley co-wrote the book with two other medical professionals. It is a brilliant resource, although at some 700plus pages, one that I will not keep on my bookshelf, sadly, as I am working on keeping my books and other stuff quite minimal. If any of you happen to have it, I would love to borrow it, though.
